Going For Gold

All that glitters is not gold, but gold happens to be our absolute favourite at the moment. To say that we have a bit of an obsession would be an understatement. Gold is perfect for accessorising as it adds instant glamour and that can only be a good thing.

Weekend in London by our new designer Jane

Having only moved to London a short three weeks ago, I haven’t had too much time to go exploring. With one of my sisters visiting last weekend, we decided to have a day being proper tourists and visit the most iconic places London has to offer! We stopped by at Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament before wandering down by the Thames for a bit of lunch on Southbank. We spent the early afternoon wandering through Notting Hill and the hustle and bustle of Portobello Road Market. It was vibrant, colourful and SO busy – which I suppose it was to be expected on a Saturday afternoon! From antiques, old cameras, bric-a-brac, traditional letterpress stamps, vintage handbags, accessories, clothing and jewellery, every stall you turned to was buzzing with shoppers searching for something unique. With such a variety of items and lots of original, hand-made art work, I found it to be such a great source of inspiration and it is definitely somewhere I will be visiting again when I’m in need of a creative boost!

SOMETHING SWEET

The battle to be the champion of The Great British Bake Off 2013 is in full swing; it’s the half way stage in the competition and we are enjoying every minute! Watch the amateurs as they fight it out through tricky technical bakes and spectacular show stoppers – it’s always a great inspiration to get creative in the kitchen and cook up some tasty treats for yourself. For a classy finishing touch, display your creations on our Belle cake stand. We’re sure Mary Berry and Mr Hollywood would approve.

Oh to be in Thailand…..

It’s hard to know where to start when talking about Thailand, which (India aside) could definitely be the Bombay Duck spiritual home. We have just returned from a trip to visit our lovely manufacturers and start developments for our exciting new collections – watch this space!

To start with the taxis and even the buses are PINK! In fact, we would go as far as to say they are Bombay Duck pink (Pantone 225 to be precise). Thailand is a country with a smiley disposition, much like the Bombay Duck team and products and their cheeriness is infectious.

Thailand Taxi

We witnessed the New Year celebrations on our recent visit, where the custom is to throw water on each other, one huge water fight, what fun!

The food is delicious. From lemongrass and coconut flavours to sweet mangoes and pineapple. The street food is fresh and yummy.

Of course Bangkok is also a shoppers paradise, a serious pastime for the Bombay Duck buying team (it’s work of course!) Bangkok has so many unique boutiques full of treasures. We love It Happened To Be A Closet near Siam Paragon as well as the gorgeous collections from Ginger. The famous weekend market is also great for finding all sorts of things that you didn’t know that you needed.

Oh and it’s hot and sunny. What reason is there not to love Thailand! We hope to be back soon!

Hong Kong Diary

We love Hong Kong! It is a real city with lots of energy. We were visiting our manufacturers to check out the new developments we have been working on. In between meetings and showroom visits, we explored and shopped. The shops in Hong Kong are like Aladdin’s cave. You never know what you find and you can find some real gems. The highlight of the trip was taking the Star ferry across the water at dusk and watching the city lights light up. As we departed Hong Kong for Shanghai, we were already looking forward to our next visit.

Things that make us smile

Sometimes it’s the small things in life that put smile on your face. Things that do not cost a lot of money and still make you very happy.

Like drinking tea from pretty candy coloured mugs

or having fun with our friends

or smiling babies

Oh to be in India!

Oh, how we wish we could be in India next week. Our manufacturers will be celebrating Diwali, or Dipavali – the Hindu Festival of Lights. The name means literally ‘rows of lights’. According to legend, when Rama returned home from 14 years’ exile, having conquered the demon King Ravana, the people of Ayodhya lit the way for him with rows (avali) of clay oil lamps with string wicks (dipa). Also observed by Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains, Diwali is actually a five-day festival, including a spectacular day of fireworks, lamps and candles that represent the triumph of good (light) over evil (darkness). Rituals vary, but many people wear new clothes, share sweets and snacks, give presents and decorate their front doorsteps with brightly coloured sand.

I believe in pink

“I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.”

Happy Olympics everyone!

We are proud to be Londoners at the best of times but last Friday we were bursting with pride. The city was alive with people getting together with friends to have a party and watch the Olympics opening ceremony. And what a fantastic opening ceremony that was! Our favourite part? The Queen being escorted by James Bond.
